Is postoperative oliguria avoidable?
Postoperative salt and water retention has been recognized for most of this century. Does it matter? Can or should it be avoided? These are still questions about which debate continues. Pringle, in 1905, observed reduced urine volumes and weight gain in postoperative patients [31]. Wilkinson studied 27 patients perioperatively and observed a decrease in urinary concentrations of sodium and chlo...

Is it time to replace epileptic spikes with fast ripples? In well over a century of performing epilepsy surgery, only 60%–65% of patients are, on average, seizure-free postoperatively. 1 Despite multiple advances in neuroimaging and electrophysiologic techniques for localizing the epileptogenic zone and determining its boundaries, defining the exact amount of neuronal tissue required to resect ...
متن کاملScreening of the epileptic patient--is it worth the trouble?
More research needs to be devoted to prediction of who will develop toxic reactions. Studies such as those noting the association of valproate toxicity with young age (especially under two years) and polytherapy may reduce the number of patients with valproate liver failure by limiting the use of the drug in this higher risk group. Caution in using phenytoin in patients undergoing radiotherapy ...

Complete absence of acute compartment syndrome was observed in a consecutive series of 966 tibial fractures in African patients of diverse ethnic groups, reviewed retrospectively at our institution. Considering the incidences reported in the literature, we should have experienced between 22 and 86 cases of acute compartment syndrome. The purpose of this prospective study was to confirm these fi...
متن کاملAvascular bone necrosis of the femoral head after renal transplantation: Is it avoidable?
Background: Avascular osteonecrosis (AVN) is a serious osseous complication after renal transplantation (RT). Its prevalence clearly decreased from 20% to 4 % possibly due to the use of calcinurin inhibitors (CNI), reduction of steroid doses and use of steroid free regimens. The aim of our study was to evaluate the frequency of AVN among our kidney transplant recipients and to determine the ris...
